How to Choose a Kilt

Choosing a kilt for your wedding can be just as difficult as finding the perfect wedding dress. But here are a few tips to help you find the right kilt for your wedding.

Don’t feel like you have to follow the rules

Traditionalists may tell you that white socks can only be worn with a kilt if you are a member of a pipe band, but you should go with whatever suits your colour scheme and personal taste.

After all, it is your big day and rules are meant to be broken!

Choose a tartan early

If you are hiring a kilt, go and visit the kilt hire company as early as you can. This lets you see samples of the tartans they have available.

If you choose to get your own tartan designed, this should be started at least a year before the wedding. It can be a very complex process, and you will want the time to get it just right.

Consider the venue and other outfits

Is your wedding ultra-formal, or is it a more relaxed affair? This will influence the rest of your outfit.

If it is a very formal wedding, you may want to go for the full Prince Charlie jacket. If it’s a more relaxed wedding, an open necked shirt can look great with your kilt.

Don’t make the groomsmen match

One of the highlights of a Scottish wedding is seeing the different types of tartan come together. So why not let everyone choose their tartan, or use their family tartan? This will add to the drama of the wedding photos.

Check the length

When you pick up your outfit from the kilt hire company, you should try it on as soon as you can.

You don’t want to discover on the big day that your kilt is too long or too short!

Wear pants

Yes, it is traditional to wear nothing under your kilt, but that goes back to the days when a kilt was a battle outfit.

You’re likely to be dancing at your wedding, so it’s perfectly acceptable to cover up.
